Last week, solo musician/composer/performance artist Marcus Whale officially released their second full-length record Lucifer, an album that explores the idea of devotion, a recontextualisation of religious rituals and repositioning the titular figure as a queer icon – something other than a malevolent force of evil. To help give better insight into the album’s conceptual foundations and execution, Marcus has offered up an in-depth track-by-track breakdown of Lucifer in its entirety.

Parramatta’s New Age Noise Collective has released a new compilation called Constellation – a nine-track compendium of work from several emerging and established transgender, non-binary and female-identifying musicians. The compendium is a sublime sample of sonic cartography, putting on the map a community that is flourishing outside of the city’s male-dominated scene.

Following on from his solo debut Inland Sea and Collarbones’ 2019 effort Futurity, Marcus Whale returns with full-length album on the way. New single ‘A Ghost’ is a song about resurrections, new beginnings and the unshackling of chains that bind. It’s an ode to fallen angels – regrowing wings and taking flight once more as idols to the cast offs and disowned masses on the fringe of society.

Thrilling Sydney-born newcomers G2G have thrown another musical morsel into the yard for us starved animals to greedily fight over. ‘You Don’t Say Shit Right’ is another example of the three-piece unit’s knack for carving textured sculptures from blocks of raw dissonant sonic material.

Premiere: EX-RENTAL – ‘PURE EMOTION / RAW DATA’

Words: James Frostick
Artist image: Jake Ollett

New noise is emerging from Sydney’s experimental electronic scene courtesy of Jack De Lacy. ‘Pure Emotion / Raw Data’ is a thunderous assault on the senses. This slice of subterranean clang and throb is a study in the power of voice as an instrument that can be modulated, and how that bending via technology alters the role of the body and renders it redundant once the organic byproduct is harvested and refined.

After popping up on numerous live bills across Sydney, buzzing three-piece G2G has offered up the first taste of some recorded material. ‘No Kid No Angel’ is a piece of oblique post-punk that carries a sense of entrapment, conveying urgent sentiments regarding identity, change and growth in the face of gloom and uncertainty.

One-man party band SPOD returns with cheeky new single ‘Sexual Fantasy’ – a bop fuelled by an erotic and narcotic groove.
