Video Premiere: SHINING BIRD – ‘STRANGE LAND’

Words: James Frostick

Following on from the August release of ‘Deadlands’, the title track of their forthcoming third LP, Shining Bird are releasing a new single called ‘Strange Land’. Set to a backing of melodious and slightly melancholy indie Australiana, ‘Strange Land’ sees Shining Bird reckoning with a growing unfamiliarity with their home – the subtle changes that are  shaping it into something foreign and socially inhospitable.

Track by Track: POP FILTER – BANKSIA (BOBO INTEGRAL, OSBORNE AGAIN, SPUNK RECORDS, 2020)

Words: James Frostick & Pop Filter

On Friday August 21, Pop Filter released its debut record Banksia. While the album is somewhat of a continuation of the at-ease sound of progenitor outfit The Ocean Party, Banksia listens like a separate entity. The band took the time to share some insight on the album at large, revealing a maturity and composure that can only have been forged through a near-decade of constant collective creation.

Words: James Frostick

A lot of things went down in March 2020. As the nation shut its borders and everyone prepared themselves for the oncoming pandemic, a cloud seemed to hover over everything. Despite the ominous feeling permeating those weeks, the music scene kept churning out great records – some of which are candidates for best of the year. In an effort to keep track of the year’s best recorded material, Weirdo Wasteland is releasing monthly round-ups of albums and EPs that we didn’t have enough time to cover at the time of release. In no particular order, here is the best of what arrived in March …

View: SUNSCREEN AT BIGSOUND 2017

For a week in September, Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley becomes the focal point for the Australian music industry as the BIGSOUND Festival kicks off. Hundreds of industry members, punters and musicians assemble to see the next wave of acts perform live across several official and unofficial showcase performances.

Weirdo Wasteland, in conjunction with photographer Jeff Andersen Jnr. and Jet Black Cat Music, put a call out to some BIGSOUND artists we admire to enlist them for a series of portraits taken at Bloodhound Bar throughout the week.

The latest in the series is Sydney’s Sunscreen. The band came up to Brisbane to play a series of sideshows throughout the week, and we took the opportunity to chat to Sunscreen members Sarah Sykes and Alexander McDonald about the band’s beginnings and a forthcoming EP.  Check out the chat and gallery below.

The Ocean Party return with a new album this month even though the dust had barely settled on their 2014 effort. Light Weight is the fifth album from the group that thrives on the continual cycle of writing, recording, touring and repeating. I spoke to the band when they performed in Brisbane last month and got an insight into how the band operates and how they keep up the pace.

Interview: Gold Class

Layered in meaning and doused in heady post-punk atmosphere, It’s You by Gold Class is one of the more thematically striking albums of 2015 thanks in no small part to the bold and powerful observations littered throughout. This album is less a call to arms, more the sound of a band fed up with several of society’s flaws.

In Review: BORED NOTHING – SOME SONGS (SPUNK RECORDS, 2014)

borednothingcover2

Some Songs by Bored Nothing strikes me as a romantic album – not in a conventional “love song” sense, but as more of an intense, emotionally charged record that details the blissful highs, woeful lows, peaceful adoration, heart-wrenching jealousy and the inner vulnerability that goes hand in hand with genuine affection and dedication.
