Meatspin records has been responsible for putting out some of the most exciting sounds emanating from Sydney’s underground music scene. Ahead of a flurry of new releases, we chatted with Meatspin’s head honcho (and music journalist / musician of note) Max Easton about the label’s genesis, its creative ethos and how small-scale labels remain the lifeblood of Australia’s fringe music industry.
With a gnashing fury buoyed by a destructive sonic onslaught, Sydney’s XILCH are on the cusp of unleashing its debut cassette release. ‘My World’ exemplifies the band’s penchant for unrelenting power, with influence plumbed from some of punk’s nihilistic best.
Sydney punk outfit Basic Human dropped its debut release in mid-April like a lit explosive, dispensing with pleasantries and choosing to deliver its statement of intent at max volume. Cassette packs gnarled lyrical utterings that savage the soul and the status-quo, propelled along by ruthless noise that’s a step up from being primal, but still not too far removed from the primordial soup.
Weirdo Wasteland is an Australian-based music blog that examines musical endeavour from the cultural fringe. The site regularly features reviews and interviews from the underground scenes from Australia and New Zealand.
