Following on from the release of their impressive full-length record Broadcast Park, Brisbane’s Tape/Off are today unveiling the visuals for single ‘Wake in Fright’. Influenced by the Australian outback’s vicious notoriety, the track and clip provide an unsettling snapshot of our landscape’s history and terrifying isolation.
Picnic at Hanging Rock, Wolf Creek, Killing Ground – the Australian outback has proved a suitable setting for some of our film industry’s most memorable horror movies and thrillers. What makes it so memorable? Well, bush horror draws much of its terror from its isolated setting, where nature is relentless in its ferocity and help is hundreds of kilometers away. Speaking of that help, residents of Australia’s middle regions are typically friendly community-minded folk, willing to help at a moment’s notice. But most of our slasher cinema focuses on the unhinged loner – the resident of society’s absolute fringe who thrives on the anonymity afforded by isolation. The existential dread of the outback and the unforgiving life residents are forced to lead makes for an interesting breeding ground of terror, and its here that Brisbane’s Tape/Off draw inspiration for ‘Wake in Fright’.
The clip for’Wake in Fright’ (created by Andrew Wade, Allan Allport and Jordan Cosic) is a thematic extension of this idea, as a masked individual stalks the Australian country side looking for unwary prey. Influenced by infamous ‘Ozploitation’ flick Wake in Fright – itself a harrowing dissection of outback paranoia – the clip provides a suitably unsettling visual accompaniment to the twisted and threatening guitar rock of the song itself. Dirt roads, dingy pubs, isolated watering holes and cloudy skies – ‘Wake in Fright’ manages to capture the unpredictable nature of our backyard and its potential for grief and woe.
