Premiere: AUSMUTEANTS – ‘HORNY WORLD’

Prolific Geelong crew Ausmuteants have returned to deliver another sample of their crooked outsider rabble. The band has linked up with German outfit PUFF to release a joint 7”, one side containing Ausmuteants’ brand of whirling hyperactive irreverence, while the second offers a dose of PUFF’s cacophonous sound that is undeniably gripping. It’s a pleasure to give you a taste in the form of the track ‘Horny World’ by Ausmuteants.

Ausmuteants are a band with an interesting world view. They don’t necessarily lean towards the world being inherently good or bad, but they do tend to enjoy crafting music that examines the more offbeat nuances of society. It’s mostly all tongue-in-cheek, but you’d be hard pressed to find other groups that are so pointed with their perceptions. The group’s latest 7”, a split with German punk group PUFF released through AARGHT Records, examines two aspects of millennial culture – dating applications and financial domination in ‘Horny World’ and ‘Account Siphon’, respectively. For the purposes of this here piece we’ll look at the former, but the subject matter of both tracks prove my point when I say the band prefers topics outside the ordinary.

‘Horny World’ is an animated track that only lasts roughly one and a half minutes, but that’s plenty of time for the band to paint a pretty bleak picture of online dating. It’s straightforward in composition, lean and taught. It’s got a bit of grit and bark, offering instant gratification that conveniently correlates nicely with the thematic content. Ausmuteants seem fixated on a few aspects of dating apps specifically – the undeniable convenience of the service, the way they emphasise superficiality, the preconception that their use typically equates to physical satisfaction, and their complete failure to address the underlying causes of loneliness. It’s a lot that say in a 1:36 runtime, but the lyrics really don’t pull any punches:

It’s 2 am and you don’t wanna be alone / but now you can find company on your phone / swipe and tap to release that tension / your lovely personality won’t even get mentioned

I mean, it says it right there. There’s no inherent shame in desiring physical contact, but ‘Horny World’ highlights the shallow nature of the service and its widespread expectation that it leads to sex. If that’s what both parties are into, then great! That being said, the horny dude in this track doesn’t seem to care much for his counterpart, as long as he gets his rocks off. Like Ausmuteants say, it’s a horny world! Have a listen:

A quick aside to give mention to PUFF – the tracks on the release are some of the more interesting songs I’ve heard in recent memory. Skuzzed out, dissonant punk that is as arresting as it is unusual. The whole 7” is worth a purchase. Funnily enough, you can do so through AARGHT Records right here.

You can catch Ausmuteants at Jerkfest on February 10 – that is unless you haven’t got a ticket already, because it’s sold out. Them’s the breaks. The group will also be playing a show with Straight Arrows at a secret location in Collingwood on February 24.
